Corporate & Foundation Relations
Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start the process of soliciting a corporation or foundation?
If a faculty/staff member is interested in approaching a corporation or foundation, he/she should complete a Corporate and Foundation Clearance Request form.

What does it mean for a corporation or foundation to be centrally managed or coordinated?
A centrally managed corporation or foundation typically meets the following criteria:
  • it is of interest to multiple units within the University
  • it has the capacity to make a contribution of more than $250,000 over 5 years
  • the solicitation/proposal may require the President's approval and signature
  • it only accepts one request from an organization during it's annual funding cycle
  • it is of key interest to the University-wide mission, goal and priorities

To find out what corporations and foundations are centrally managed or coordinated, please refer to a list of Top Tier Centrally Managed and Coordinated Corporations and Foundations.

What criteria are used to determine if clearance is granted or denied?
CFR grants or denies clearance in conjunction with University Leadership and Executive Officers using the following criteria:
  • Is the project approved by the Dean/Vice President for fundraising?
  • Is there a strong relationship between prospect and faculty member?
  • Does solicitation meet organization's guidelines and priorities?
  • Does solicitation coincide with organization's giving history and demonstrated area of interest?
  • Does solicitation seek an appropriate amount based on the corporation/foundation guidelines and match the appropriate University priority?
  • Is organization currently being solicited by another unit at DePaul?
  • Will solicitation conflict with other solicitations from University?

What happens when clearance is granted or denied?
If clearance is granted, faculty/staff member develops solicitation plan/proposal in coordination with their respective School/College Development Officer or CFR staff.
  • Faculty/staff member is encouraged to work with CFR staff to contact organization via personal visits, invites to campus, telephone calls or other means.
  • Faculty/staff member must keep the development officer or CFR contact informed to ensure that proper cultivation, gift receipting & stewardship is maintained throughout the development process.

If clearance is denied, proper notification is sent and reasons for denial are discussed with the Faculty/Staff member.

What if a conflict arises when multiple units or individuals are interested in the same prospect?
The Director of CFR will attempt to resolve the conflict. If an agreement cannot be reached, the CFR Director in conjunction with Deans will attempt to resolve the situation. If the conflict continues, the Senior Vice President for Advancement of the University will attempt to resolve it. But if the conflict prevails, the President will make a final decision.
