Exelon Foundation Gives $400,000 to DePaul Science Campaign

The Exelon Foundation announced it will contribute $400,000 to DePaul University in support of its $20 million Campaign for Excellence in Science.

The gift will go toward construction of the Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Science Building on DePaul's Lincoln Park Campus, which will house the school's chemistry and environmental sciences departments and provide space for DePaul's growing biology department.

The 129,000 square-foot, four-story building is scheduled to open for classes in January 2009. A 100-seat, tiered auditorium on the building's first floor and a second story skyway connecting the new building to an existing building will be named in recognition of the Exelon Foundation's support.

"We are delighted that the Exelon Foundation has invested in DePaul's commitment to high-quality science education," said the Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., DePaul's president. "The economic strength of the country and the well-being of its citizens will in large measure depend upon our becoming a nation of learners and innovators in science and technology."

The new building will incorporate several "green" features, including a partial green roof, innovative waste water handling technologies, water-efficient landscaping, and the use of certified wood products, low-emitting finish materials and recycled construction materials. The building is expected to receive the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification rating.

"One of the priorities of the Exelon Foundation is to support science education. Another foundation focus is to promote the use of energy efficient technology. The new science building at DePaul University combines both of these concerns," said Steve Solomon, Exelon Foundation president. "We are proud to facilitate construction of DePaul's first major 'green' building, and support the university's integrated approach to teaching science."

Frank M. Clark, who is chairman and CEO of ComEd, an Exelon operating company, is a DePaul alumnus and trustee. He also co-chairs the university's Campaign for Excellence in Science.

DePaul's Campaign for Excellence in Science has raised 89.4 percent of its $20 million goal. In addition to the new building, the campaign is raising money to recruit and train science educators and professionals, bolster research opportunities for undergraduate students and build alliances with area high schools and community colleges to increase overall enrollment and graduation rates in the sciences.
